Welcome to About Kookfontein Rooibos Tea – our story, our farm, and the people behind your cup of Rooibos.
All about living on a Rooibos Tea Farm
Call us naive, or as a co-worker at the time said, “changing the bustling civilisation for a laid-back life,” but we took the plunge with a dream. If ouma and oupa lived like this, surely we could too.
Reality hit fast. Water had to be fetched—no more just turning a tap. The heat was relentless, and during those early days, we had to learn how to stay hydrated. Our own Rooibos, brewed with cool fountain water and a pinch of salt, became our lifesaver—keeping headaches at bay and giving a little extra energy to keep going.
We learned to cook on a coal stove, warm water in a donkey, and battle a gas fridge that refused to cope with the heat. This led to a new skill: buying foods that didn’t need refrigeration—tinned goods, long-life milk, and items that could last. Even today, planning just enough without overstocking is a challenge, as trips to town are never guaranteed.
Creative cooking became another essential lesson. Meals were made from what we had on hand, improvising with leftovers rather than following recipe books that assumed every ingredient was available. It was a crash course in patience, resourcefulness, and learning to love the simple pleasures of Cederberg farm life.

What is Rooibos?
Rooibos (say: Roy-boss) is a shrub that grows only in South Africa’s Cederberg region. Naturally caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants, it’s known for its smooth taste and calming effect.
At Kookfontein, our Rooibos is harvested and dried slowly under the African sun—keeping things as natural as possible
