Types of Rooibos – The Difference Between
Natural | Organic | Wild | Green |Rooibos for Horses | Rooibos Mulch/Compost
Types of Rooibos – From Our Cederberg Soil to Your Cup
Not all Rooibos is the same—and we wouldn’t want it to be. Every type has its own colour, flavour, and purpose, shaped by where it grows and how it’s handled. Whether you’re sipping it from a teacup, mixing it into horse feed, or sprinkling it into your veggie patch, there’s a Rooibos for that. At Kookfontein, we walk alongside farmers, harvesters, and nature herself to bring you Rooibos in all its forms—each one telling its own earthy, sun-dried story.
Natural Rooibos – Everyday Tea, Just As Nature Intended
Everyday Rooibos, Just as Nature Intended
This is the Rooibos most people know and love. Grown, harvested, fermented, and dried under the Cederberg sun, it’s full of flavour and free from fuss. No blending, no infusions—just pure, honest tea.
Natural Rooibos goes through a fermentation process: the cut leaves are dampened, then heaped up to oxidize overnight. That’s when the magic happens—the green turns red, and the flavour deepens into something rich, warm, and comforting.
We pack it by hand, straight from the farm, and offer it in bulk, wholesale, and smaller packs.
- Available in: Natural Rooibos, bulk or wholesale
- No caffeine. No additives. Just rooibos, like Ouma would have made it.
Kookfontein Natural Fine Cut Rooibos
Understanding Rooibos Cuts
Just like any good ingredient, Rooibos comes in different cuts—each with its own purpose, flavour strength, and feel. Whether you’re a tea lover, a blender, or buying for horses or exports, knowing your cut makes all the difference
Not all cuts are created equal. Each one has its own feel, strength, and purpose:
-
Long Cut Rooibos – A coarser, elegant cut. Steeps slowly, brews richly. Ideal for loose-leaf lovers and export blends.
-
Fine Cut (Short Cut) – Smaller pieces. Perfect for teabags or quick steeps. Full-bodied and strong.
-
Stokkies Tea – Raw, unsifted Rooibos with bits of stem. Old-school and hearty. Needs boiling. Commonly used for horses.
Long Cut Rooibos
This is the classy one—the long, leafy cut that feels like Rooibos in its Sunday best. At Kookfontein, we call it the “slow brew with a big heart.” It’s made by cutting the Rooibos into longer, coarser pieces. That means it steeps slower, but don’t be fooled—it delivers a deep, full flavour without all the dust you often find in bagged teas. Long Cut Rooibos is perfect for loose-leaf brewing and is often the go-to choice for export and high-end blends. It's a favourite among tea lovers who like to take their time and truly taste the goodness in every cup.
Fine Cut Rooibos
This cut is the everyday workhorse—strong, quick, and full of flavour. Fine Cut Rooibos, sometimes called Short Cut, is chopped into smaller, finer pieces. It’s the standard cut for teabags, but also perfect for a fast steep if you’re in a hurry. The smaller size means more surface area, which gives you a bolder, darker brew in less time. Whether you’re pouring a quick cuppa at sunrise or using it in your wellness blends, Fine Cut Rooibos is reliable, tasty, and easy to love.
Stokkies Tea (Raw, Unpasteurized)
This is Rooibos in its most old-school form. We call it “Oupa se tee” because it reminds us of the kind our grandparents used to boil on the stove. Stokkies Tea isn’t sifted or refined—it includes all the bits and bobs like stems and thicker pieces. It’s raw, unpasteurized, and sold just as it comes from the land. While it’s not food-grade for humans unless boiled, many of our clients use it for horses or traditional brews. It’s rough around the edges, but hearty and wholesome—the kind of Rooibos that speaks of fireside chats and enamel mugs.
📌 Unpasteurized Rooibos for horses not suitable for human consumption
Rooibos for Horses
We don’t own horses ourselves, but many of our clients do. Over the years, we’ve listened and learned—and now supply unpasteurized short-cut Rooibos specially for equine use.
It’s not food-grade for people, but it’s fresh, raw, and loved by horses. Some mix it dry into feed, others brew it like a tea and pour it over. Word is, it may support hydration, gut health, and even coat shine.
- Available in: 20kg bags

Rooibos for Mulch and Compost
Farm Tip:
Did you use your Rooibos? Don’t toss it! That red gold still has work to do. Rooibos mulch keeps bugs at bay, locks in moisture, and feeds your soil slowly. Even the sweepings, dust, and stalks left from cutting can go straight into your garden beds.
We believe waste is just potential in disguise. Our leftover Rooibos finds new life beneath the tomatoes, roses, and lemon trees.

Type Rooibos – Organic Rooibos – Clean from Soil to Sip
Certified Clean from Soil to Sip
When we speak of organic Rooibos, we mean Rooibos that’s been grown with the same care your ouma might’ve used in her garden—without any artificial fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Just natural farming methods, healthy soil, and the rhythm of the seasons.
By definition, “Organic Rooibos (red or green) is grown without the use of any artificial fertilisers or pesticides. The organic status of the product is monitored by various international organisations that provide organic certification.”
(SARC (B), 2016)
Grown without artificial chemicals or sprays, organic Rooibos is for the conscious sipper. Certified by international bodies, it’s as clean as they come—farmed with care and packed with goodness.
We don’t grow it ourselves, but we work with small organic farmers who do. Together, we offer a gentle, earthy tea that’s as close to nature as you can get.
- Available in red or green organic Rooibos (on request)
- Certified by EU, US, or Japanese organic standards
Type Rooibos – Wild Rooibos
The Untamed Bush That Grows Where It Pleases
Wild Rooibos isn’t planted—it grows where it wants, usually on rocky slopes far from any farmland. Harvested by hand by local pickers, it’s bold, rare, and full of character.
Because it grows deep in the veld, it’s only available in small batches and usually seasonally. It’s a taste of the land as it was generations ago—untamed and unforgettable.
- Kookfontein do not sell or source Wild Rooibos
Wild Rooibos is something truly special. It’s not planted, sprayed, or watered—it simply grows wild in the veld, in the rocky, sandy soils of the Cederberg and surrounding mountains. This is Rooibos that occurs naturally, just like it did generations ago, long before fences and farmlands.
By definition, Wild Rooibos is Rooibos that grows in the veld in areas where it occurs naturally. It’s not cultivated by man, but found and harvested by those who know where to look. The plants are often older, deeper rooted, and more resilient—making the tea a little stronger, bolder, and full of character.
Harvesting Wild Rooibos is done by hand, usually by local harvesters who’ve worked the land for years. It’s slow work, and small-scale. That’s why Wild Rooibos is more expensive, a bit rare, and often seasonal—more like a foraged product than a farmed crop.
A wonderful resource we’ve come across is The Sustainable Harvest of Wild Rooibos by Rhoda Malgas and Noel Oettle. It highlights not only the beauty of Wild Rooibos, but the need to protect it for future generations—keeping the harvest fair, respectful, and in harmony with nature.
We don’t always have Wild Rooibos available—but when we do, we offer it in its natural, fermented form. And yes, it’s as wild and beautiful as the mountains it comes from.
Wild Rooibos is available from Kookfontein on request, depending on seasonal availability. Terms and conditions apply.
Type Rooibos – Green Rooibos – Light, Fresh & Antioxidant-Rich
Unfermented, Light & Antioxidant-Rich
Green Rooibos is the quiet cousin of traditional Rooibos—fresh, gentle, and naturally packed with antioxidants. What makes it different is what doesn’t happen: it’s not fermented at all.
By definition, “Green – or unfermented – Rooibos is harvested, cut and then dried immediately, without the fermentation step. When served, it has a lighter colour compared to traditional Rooibos.”
(SARC (A), 2016)
Unlike traditional Rooibos, green Rooibos is dried without fermentation. That keeps it light in colour and high in natural antioxidants.
It tastes more like a grassy green tea but without the caffeine or bitterness. A favourite among wellness lovers, detoxers, and anyone looking for a gentle daily brew.
